How Massage Therapy Can Reduce Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms

In the last several years, massage therapy has become fundamental in treating all kinds and types of illnesses and injuries, Multiple sclerosis included.

Massage is a member of a group called CAM therapy; CAM is an acronym for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Doctors are embracing CAM therapies and quite often combine them with mainstream medical therapies. Patients with Multiple sclerosis (MS) have reported proven benefits of massage therapy reducing their MS symptoms. Multiple sclerosis is an inflammatory disease of the CNS (Central Nervous System) with no current cure or form of treatment.

Starting with pre-treatment, massage therapy can be very helpful in lessening discomfort from subluxation in patients with MS. Massage therapy is a big stress buster and it is thought to be the most widely used CAM by MS patients. Massage is therapeutic for MS patients since it relieves and relaxes the muscles and tissue, returning the flow of blood to the injured or affected site, which ultimately promotes healing and restoration of the affected area. In addition to restoring blood flow, massage also increases lymph circulation aiding relaxation and normalization of the soft tissue. One of the benefits derived from all this is the relaxation response; this is where your breathing slows your blood pressure, allowing lesser stress hormones to be produced.

Following massage is manipulation herbs relaxation therapy and acupuncture as well as several more CAMs and Complementary therapies. The comfort field for MS patients is wide open and as long as there are therapists who specialize in massage there will always be a client base. That base is the MS patient.

Of course, patients should not expect massage therapy to be a cure for their MS. In fact, massage therapy shouldn't be viewed as a treatment at all. However, massage therapy can improve a patient's quality of life and mood. Patients who need stress reduction to manage their MS symptoms, massage therapy emphasizing long strokes and light pressure is recommended.
